Opened in 1969, Golden Phoenix Restaurant is one of the most highly acclaimed, time-honoured local steakhouses in the city. Over the years, it has been a popular venue for meat-lovers to enjoy “old Hong Kong-style” steaks at a bargain price. With more than 50 years of extensive experience in the kitchen, and a history of working in prestigious five-star hotels, founder of the restaurant Mr. Lam, commonly known as “the king of steaks”, worked tirelessly for decades and managed to expand his business in both Hong Kong and Zhongshan with several branches across the region.

In the 1960s and 1970s, a time when most western cuisines were served only in upscale gourmet restaurants marketed at high-end consumers, Lam decided to put the vast culinary skills he had acquired over the years to good use, and successfully created his very own “Hong Kong-style” steaks. His creations were surprisingly well received and, more importantly, affordable for most diners. Served on a sizzling hot plate and topped with fragrant black pepper sauce or gravy, these mouth-watering steaks are juicy, soft and full of flavour. 

Apart from the famous steaks on offer, Lam’s friendly and easy-going personality also enchanted diners from near and far. Not only did he like to use his legendary catchphrase, “Follow me!”, as he showed customers their tables, he also held his own talk show in the 1990s, giving pointers on how to prepare the perfect steaks. During this era, his humorous interactions with customers always filled the restaurant with laughter and joy. Thanks to widespread media coverage, the restaurant soon skyrocketed in popularity. 

Today, the business is run by Lam’s two daughters, but loyal patrons still enjoy a good chat with the crew while savouring delicious meals that truly represent our Hong Kong heritage.
